GUNFIELD is an enjoyable roguelite. You control a spaceship and the gameplay is a lot like a shoot ’em up combined with a survivor game. Each run you’ll unlock money which allows you to buy a few upgrades to become stronger. However, my biggest complaint is that there are only a few upgrades. After 2 hours or so I had unlocked everything and money became useless while still having 2/3 bosses to go. You’ll not have many moments in this game where you feel overpowered. Most of the time you’re underpowered even. You need to focus on 1 skill at a time to be able to easily kill the enemies and have more experience because you were able to kill them quicker. I really missed feeling overpowered, had like 1 or 2 amazing runs out of like 30. Most runs were just fine power-wise and sometimes I made really bad choices and struggled through as run the best I could.

I still had a lot of fun and knew I wanted to at least unlock all the characters and beat a run with all of them. What is also nice is that for your first weapon you have endless amounts of rerolls, so you can really choose your starting weapon. Not sure why it just isn’t an menu where you choose the weapon you want to start with, but this works as well. Your first weapon is really important. You kinda want a fast and strong weapon, not one that is hard to aim or very slow, as that will give you less opportunity to farm exp very early on, as the enemies will fly by and move off the screen if you didn’t kill them. Another thing I liked is how you unlocked new weapons and characters. By having other weapons max level or completing a specific boss.

None of the achievements are missable. You will unlock most of them by just completing runs with different characters and using different weapons/bonusses. However, there is an achievement for every end boss to kill it without taking damage. I think using the shield bonus can help with this but I’m not totally sure. Those achievements are very challenging and I only managed to get it for the first boss. I kept being underpowered for the second boss to kill him quickly and he is quite challenging. And I can’t even imagine beating that last boss without getting hit, as that one is crazy.

This review is kinda mixed, sadly Steam doesn’t allow to choose that option :(. I give GUNFIELD 3 out of 5 stars.
