In Stars And Time

In Stars and Time is a masterpiece. The game mechanics have been thought through so deeply while also keeping an eye for all the tiny details. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this game so deeply.

In Stars and Time is a wonderful game. I haven’t completed it yet but there is so much passion and so much love thrown into this title. It is brilliant in so many ways.

The way it starts with the party already being over level 40, because they have already had a whole journey behind them and you jump into the story right before the real action is about to begin, fighting the evil king. I love how this RPG dealt with the story in a way that you’re learning more and more about the characters and the journey they already had through dialog in the current time. And I find it really smart how the game doesn’t throw with high numbers in the turn-based combat because you’re already at such a high level but have a whole system around the stone, paper scissors game.

It is a time loop game, so you will go back in time to find new things, fix things, or maybe ask people about things you learned in a previous loop. This is done in a wonderful way, you have save points and you can start a new loop from those points, keeping the highest level you had when saving at that point. There is also a fast-forward button for conversations you’ve already had, although they can change a bit with new information. The time loop idea is done in such an amazing way that the main character knows they are doing time loops, but the questionsthey have are also the questions you have. Experiments they want to do to test out this time loop thing are things you as a player might also be curious about. This loop system is done in such a way that it is trying to be as less as annoying as possible, while still having all the benefits of a time loop element.

And if there wasn’t already enough passion put into the game mechanics and the story, the artwork is also beautiful. It might be black and white, but it has so much detail. The facial expressions people show on the screens can be so detailed and different from line to line.

So a long review short, in Stars and Time is a masterpiece. The game mechanics have been thought through so deeply while also keeping an eye for all the tiny details. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this game so deeply.
