Lost in Random: The Eternal Die

What a cool roguelite game with amazing artwork, a fantastic dice companion, and cute little dicelings! It has very challenging achievements and another very grindy achievement. My guess would be that completion takes around 20 hours.

Fortune from Lost in Random: the eternal Dice

I always thought Lost in Random looked so cool, but I never took the time to play through it. Here is the second game in this universe, but it is a standalone story. It has some flashbacks to the first title and I think you’ll pick up on subtle things way easier when you have played through the story, but it isn’t a requirement. Want to get up to speed quickly on the story? The developers made this excellent short video:

The biggest reason this series intrigues me is that my other main hobby is board games, and seeing so many board game pieces in the artwork and also woven into the story is such a cool thing! Having a dice companion is the best, and can I take a quick moment to highlight how cute it is when your companion laughs? It is so, so cute, and I’m glad we got treated to a “hihihi” giggle a few times throughout the story! You’ll also collect some dicelings (aka mini dice) through the game, hiding in rooms without enemies. They are adorable and will show up in your main hub after finding them.

The combat in Lost in Random: The Eternal Die feels chaotic but very good and responsive. At first, I found the combat quite hard, but you’ll learn the combat moves of each enemy over time, and you’ll get more upgrades, making you stronger over time. Most of LiR: tED reminds me of Hades, but the temporary skill system during the runs felt so unique. You have a board with blocks on it, and you’ll place artifacts on them, but those also have colors, and if you make a 3 in a row (or higher), you’ll get a bonus in that specific category. So you don’t want the right artifacts for your current run, you also want to place them right and get the right colors on them to be able to make 3 in a row and get that bonus. And would you maybe even build over a very good artifact, just because the colors the new one has?

The achievements in Lost in Random: The Eternal Die are a beast of their own. Some are easy to do and will unlock over time, but some require some luck (which makes sense with the game’s theme), and others are just so challenging. The achievement to unlock all Aama’s blessings is very grindy. I hoped you only needed one set of blessings (as you can choose between two in each spot), sadly, this isn’t the case, and you need all of them. If I would have gone for this achievement, I probably would have just repeating the first two worlds, as the enemies are just faster and easier to kill than they are in last two worlds.

LiR: tED also has achievements for getting to the first boss without getting hit and individual achievements for beating each boss without getting hit. I’m not the best at combat and I’m very chaotic, I think I could do it one the second boss if I want to and keep trying, but I’m sure I’ll never be able to do this on the last boss, as that fight is so chaotic at the end. So I would say this game is really challenging in unlocking all the achievements, but it is a lot of fun and worth playing through even if you don’t want to go for all the achievements.

I give Lost in Random: The Eternal Die 4 out of 5 stars.
