I had a lovely afternoon with Monch! Exploring this open world and collecting all kinds of stuff while finding all the secrets just felt so good. Time flew by without me even noticing, as there was always something to do or work toward.

In Monch! You play as a slime kinda creature that isn’t afflicted by the corruption that is going on. You can eat the crystals and the infected creatures without any adverse effects… even better, if you eat the infected creatures, you gain their abilities. That way, you get the ability to jump, glide, roll, and blow wind, and use those abilities to get further and solve puzzles. There are four zones in the game; in each zone, you find one of each creature to improve your abilities. So with the first creature that gives you the jump ability, you gain the jump ability, but the second gives you double jump, and the third gives you triple jump, etc. Each ability gets stronger that way.

Finding the creatures isn’t too challenging, as there are purple tentacle/bone-like things coming from the area they are in, so look for those to gain their abilities. Most of the crystals are also relatively easy to find. However, if you’re struggling with finding the last few, each elder of their zone can give you a hint where to find another crystal for 10 of the small currencies that can be found in their zone. And this isn’t the only quality of life feature, as you also quickly unlock the warp ability as soon as you reach the area of an elder. Another thing that I really love is that there is no fall damage or damage in any way. It is just a relaxing game in which you explore the world and find all the secrets.

I’m happy that for the achievements, you don’t need to find the lore items or small collectibles. Those last ones are only used to get hints for the crystals, but you don’t need them to unlock any of the achievements. The lore items are optional as well. If you want to go nuts and still find them all, you can, and the game will tell you on the pause screen how many you’re missing in each area.

None of the achievements are missable, and completion takes around 5 hours without a guide. You receive achievements for unlocking all the abilities, getting the abilities to max level, completing quests you receive during the game, and for finding all the crystals in each zone. You can go through the ending and still get back into your save afterwards.

I give Monch! 4 out of 5 stars.
