On Your Tail Review

On Your Tail

On Your Tail is a great game that reminds me of the Ace Attorney series combined with a bit of “Mastermind”. Completion takes around 30 to 40 hours. I expect this to lower once everything has been found and documented. It has no missable achievements.

On Your Tail is an adventure game in which you decide to leave home and go on a journey. Gladly you took your Chronolens with you as that will help you solve all kinds of weird things that are happening around Borgo Marina, a small village where you end up spending your holidays.

With your Chronolens you will be able to find weird things in the environment and recreate what has happened before. Once you found all the different elements you will go through a cute-looking simulation to see what happened in which order. at the end of it you’ll get feedback on which scenes where in the correct spot. Later on you also get extra objectives, sometimes even hidden objectives like somebody has to finish first in a race or somebody can’t notice any of the changes. In the beginning, this felt like a logic puzzle, you kinda had an idea of what happened so you could figure the things or order out. Later on it was a matter of see each scene at least once to be able to see the smaller details but at the end it sometimes was also just brute force your way to find the correct order. I was enjoying the story and the mysteries a lot and couldn’t stop playing, but that and how cute the game looks helped me get through it because brute forcing a solution because frustrating from time to time.

Next to the mysteries, there are also a lot of activities to do in this small village. You’ll be making friends, watching movies, reading books, and working on different jobs like helping in a restaurant, delivering letters around the village, and running an ice cream shop. Most of the mini-games attached to those activities were great and I might even enjoy those the most, like the restaurant mini-game. A few of them are quite frustrating (the marble game because of the camera, or gazing for stars because the lens is just so slow).

I really enjoyed On Your Tail a ton. The story is so intriguing and keeps you going. furthermore getting to know the people and their backstory was amazing. Becoming closer friends and playing so many mini-games. I love it when a game gives me the feeling that there is something to do and there is a choice between so many things. What makes it even better is that there is no time pressure at all, so there is no stress of having to do X on time.

The game has and had quite a few bugs (on launch), but it is a big game. And I can say that the devs are very responsive and working hard on fixing it all. I expect that soon most things will be fixed and there will be added improvements to the game. What more can you ask after a game is launched than for responsive and friendly devs who work hard to make the game the best experience it can be?

Achievement wise, I’m happy to say that none of the achievements are missable. At the end of the story, the game warns you that there will be no way to return, but in reality… you can. After you finish the whole story you’ll get back into the game to the point before going through that last mission. The achievements are for just doing everything. Finish the main story, level up all friendships, meet everybody, play every level of a mini-game, and buy every single item. It has a nice overview with cards that show you where you’re missing stuff. I highly recommend first playing blind through the story and after that maybe look up what you’re missing.

I give On Your Tail 4 out of 5 stars, I had an amazing time!
