Slime Heroes

Slime Heroes is a cute action game with an enormous world to discover. It is a Souls-like but has a lot of settings to make it easier. I found this game so addictive and just couldn’t stop playing. One achievement might be missable.

* I don’t understand how to trigger the good or bad ending, I think I got the good ending. So it might be the case that you always have to play twice through the game but I don’t think this is the case and that you can trigger the bad ending first and later the good ending.

In Slime Heroes, you play as this cute little slime that has to save the world. His friend got kidnapped, and you go on a journey to save them. Before you start the adventure, you can choose the colors of your slime, and later on, you can choose between different weapon types as well as different hats. The hats will get the color of your slime, which is an interesting choice. I might have liked it a little more if the hats had a standard color, or you could choose a different color for the hat you’re wearing versus the color of your slime. But it makes sense for a slime just to take on the form of the hat.

Slime Heroes is a cute open-world action-adventure game. It reminds me a lot of the earlier Zelda games (I haven’t played a new one since Zelda on the Wii). There is this enormous world map where some parts are locked at the start but open up with the new abilities you unlock. There are also a bunch of dungeons, there are dungeons which are an arena in which you fight enemies, there are puzzle dungeons, and there is a dungeon for each boss to fight a harder version of it but which unlocks a new ability.

The game has the Souls-like tag, but I’m very glad there are settings to increase the damage you do and decrease the damage you receive to make it enjoyable for everyone, not just Souls-like gamers. I wouldn’t have played this cute-looking game if it was just a Souls-like game because I don’t think I’m good at combat games, especially not at neglecting the damage enemies do.

While playing through Slime Heroes, I saw some bugs and a lot of framerate drops. I know the developers work very hard to fix the bugs, and I didn’t encounter any game-breaking bugs; it was just some small things that happened. I want to add that I played about 85% of the game before they announced delaying the game to work a little longer on the bug fixing, which was a hard decision for the team behind Slime Heroes, but I think it was the correct one. The frame rate drops I still saw a lot after returning to the game a day before the release. It didn’t bother me, but I can see that if you’re playing on a higher difficulty, it can be bothersome in a Souls-like. I’m sure the team will be working on fixing stuff after the launch, as they seem very passionate about this game.

I had so much fun with Slime Heroes that I just couldn’t stop playing. I skipped or delayed dinners just to play a little longer (which never is just “a little” 😛 ). Discovering more of the world, finding new dungeons, and finding hidden items was so addictive, and I always felt that I made progress. There was always something to do or a path to explore further. There is also a big variation between the fight patterns of the different bosses. Oh, and also, the different weapons all feel different. My favorite one was the Spear and I didn’t switch anymore after unlocking that one. Another thing that is so cool is that there are many different spells, but to add to that variation, you can add a second spell to each spell (which also can be the same spell) and you can also attach an element to it. I loved to use fire rain on enemies to add the status effect of “burn” to them.

How long it takes to unlock all the achievements is hard to say for me at this moment. I’m missing one, which I thought was bugged but turns out to be attached to the other ending. And I think that, unfortunately, I unlocked the good ending, which locked me out of the bad ending. I’m not totally sure how to unlock the bad ending, but I would recommend not completing all the dungeons and just trying to get through the story as quickly as possible to increase the chance to unlock the bad ending first. You can redo the final boss fight, so that should mean that if you get the bad ending first, you can get the good ending, right? If you unlock the bad ending first and then the good ending, I would estimate that completion takes around 16 or 17 hours.

Unlocking all the achievements will be easier if someone manages to make a guide with all the locations of the different hats. I’m missing a few of them but have no clue where in this enormous world with many dungeons to look for them. Sadly, I didn’t write down where I found the ones I got; otherwise, I would have started a guide. So please, can somebody write down from the beginning where they found each hat and make a guide with that information?

I give Slime Heroes 3,5 out of 5 stars. I can see how it has some bugs and framerate drops, but on the other hand I couldn’t stop playing and skipped dinners because of this game.
