Space Sprouts Review

Space Sprouts

I love Space Sprouts! You’ll hang around in this spaceship and try to unlock many secrets, aka memories. The more memories you find, the more time you will have on your next run. It was great to experiment with all the different things. No missable achievements and 100% takes around 10h.

In Space Sprouts, you play as Oda, a woman who travels to a different planet to make that her new home planet. The journey is long ago, and you have trouble remembering everything you did during this flight, but the journey was short—only a few minutes…

This is the premise of the game, and at the start of the game, the tutorial starts at your birth planet’s space station. This is the perfect spot for introducing the mechanics in a way that makes sense for the story. Very clever!

I quickly fell in love with Space Sprouts! It felt like a kid’s playground where you could explore so much and find little secrets. The way the game gives hints on some of the memories but then lets you figure out the rest for yourself, and there are sometimes multiple ways to achieve something. And to reward you for your efforts, you get more time on the space ship in future runs the more memories you unlocked. And there are 100 memories to figure out!

I loved to look at the memories I knew but hadn’t unlocked and some that gave hints, then jump into a new run and plan my way around those. Everything resets every run, but there is a machine that lets you fill in codes to receive specific tools without having to go all the way to get them. You can only fill in 3 codes during a run, so you still have to plan around those. This whole puzzle and exploration aspect was perfect and made me fall in love with this gem so quickly.

That you are in a spaceship made so much sense thematically; That there is a timer before you arrive, that you don’t have tools with you as it is only a short flight, but also mechanics that play around with gravity, like changing the gravity. Hence, you float to the ceiling instead of walking on the floor or even turning gravity off. The ship is very big, so you will feel lost in it for a while, but this adds to the feeling of exploration and finding creative ways with the new items you find in the new rooms you discovered.

I can’t express enough how much I enjoyed Space Sprouts. The fact that there are 100 objectives to figure out and that the runs are short is just perfect. Needing to be creative and finding your way through barriers was just so much fun!

None of the achievements are missable; you can even return to the tutorial area. Completion without a guide takes around 10 hours. I would highly recommend playing without a guide, as part of the charm of Space Sprout is figuring things out and feeling proud you found a way to do X or Y. You can always looks up a guide for the last few things if you’re really stuck. But first, play it without a guide and just a pen and paper to write down the codes you find during your runs!

I give Space Sprouts 4.5 out of 5 stars.
