Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection is a remake of an already great game. I already loved the looks of the original but this one looks awesome as well. It does quite a lot of things differently and has many improvements that the remake is a welcome new edition.

You play as Tama, who just lost someone very close to her. She decided to visit the Necromancer in the hopes of reviving Koko. However, reviving someone isn’t that easy and requires a lot of power. That is why you have to go through a huge dungeon while practicing summoning monsters. Those summoned monsters will help you get through the dungeons as they fight for you, but can also trigger mechanics by standing on pressure plates or attacking buttons to press them that way.

At first, the game is challenging because you’re low-level, and the summoned monsters are also low-level. You can save your progress in the main area, so I recommend going back there after every level so as not to lose too much progress if you die. However, leveling up goes quickly as long as you fight monsters that are around the same level as you are, so you’ll get stronger and stronger quite quickly.

I love the voice acting in this game, as well as the music and the new graphic design. Another great thing about Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection is that most of the levels are short. This way, it is easy to do another level and another one as you don’t feel trapped in a huge level and can save quite a lot. Many levels have a randomized layout, so even if you play the same level, you’ll still have the challenge of finding the key to the exit and the way to the exit.

I didn’t use summoned monsters in this version as much as in the previous one. The 3D levels make the summons get stuck quite a lot. They will respawn next to you if you keep walking and get far enough away from them, but I didn’t feel safe enough to rely on them all the time. It also made me mostly choose flying summons to join me in my fights. Another thing I struggle with is the inventory space. It is quite limited and while I understand the choice, it was a bit of a choir to remove unwanted weapons and summons constantly. I gave the suggestion to at the option to label the monsters you want to keep, so at least you don’t have to keep thinking about which ones you really don’t want to remove.

Achievement-wise, SOTN:R has no missable achievements. You can just play through the game blind and mop up later on the missing achievements. I would recommend just playing through all the levels without worrying about the medals, as they will be so much easier to unlock later on when you are a higher level and so much stronger. I will highly recommend resurrecting every monster to find all the different ones, and removing them from your inventory gives resources that can be used to improve your weapons, tools, and accessories.

I give Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection 4 out of 5 stars.
