The Plucky Squire Review

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire blows me away. I expected a fun game, as the idea was already great, but I wasn’t ready for how well the game mechanics were implemented and how much attention to detail there was. It has some missable achievements, completion takes around 10 hours.

What an amazing game and amazing story! You play as the Plucky Squire, who is helping out the local wizard on a small task… but then there are some strange things happening and the world might be in danger! So off you go to explore what is going on… and this will be the adventure you won’t expect with game mechanics that will blow you away! I love the different mini-games and just the story in general. It felt so unique and so well done. And did I already mention the details? I saw so many small details, like how the world looks but also for example the price of the book and how it changed with the story.

At first, the narration felt a bit childish. I wasn’t sure if I would be the targeted audience. I’m so glad I stuck with the game as this changed. and the narrator does such a good job of telling the story interestingly and encouragingly. The change of tone later on after a huge event was also amazing.

That I love this game shouldn’t come as a surprise, as I’m such a fan of the games Devovler publishes. I don’t know where they find all those gems but man they do a great job finding/publishing crazy, unique, wonderful, and beautiful games.

The Plucky Squire has a lot of collectibles. 50 Scrolls, most of them can be found in the wild but always keep money on hand to buy the one from the shop. As it will be a different one in every new shop you encounter. You can also find a Glitchbird in each chapter. And you will need a lot of bulbs (coins) for all the combat skills. So I highly recommend destroying every bush and hit every tree just to find enough money. However, the screen with the mouse and the big block of cheese is a nice scene to grind out money to make sure you will have enough money for sure, as you can find quite a bit of money close to the beginning of that area and then get killed instantly by that mouse to do it all over again. I believe you find this scene in chapter 6.

I followed a collectible guide to not miss out on any of the collectibles as different guides mention different things about missables. It might be that with one of the later updates they aren’t missable anymore but I didn’t want to try that out and find out it would still be missable. The guide by PowerPyx will also mention the areas for some achievements and what to do, so you don’t have to replay those areas to get back to that point, while it doesn’t tell you how to solve everything or where to go. With just checking the next collectible in that guide, so you can keep it in mind you can still explore and enjoy the game without reading too many spoilers.

I give The Plucky Squire 4.5 out of 5 stars, and I’m looking forward to what All Possible Futures (The developer behind The Plucky Squire) will be cooking up next, as I hope they will continue making games!
