I have been looking at “Unpacking” for a while, as the reviews are very good, but I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy the gameplay. I knew the achievements were doable in 2 or 3 hours without a guide and that there were no missable achievements, which is always a plus in my book.
I enjoyed this game more and more while playing through it. I never thought how much the items in your house can tell a story without much text. For example, how you want to hide a picture and not put it on the wall anymore, tell you so much as what happened before that, or why you moved to a much smaller house with fewer items. What are the hobbies you enjoy? The items in your house tell the story of your life and that is very intriguing in a like this. I enjoyed this game so much more than I expected based on the premise of the game.
What I also found amazing is how you recognize so many items from back in the day. Like seeing the GameCube and Nintendo DS, but also seeing a “troll” in the first house when the main person is still a child. The items have so many details. Like how a stuffed animal gets damaged over time or the cup holder for your toothbrush. It felt also good the main character kept those items for a long time, they felt familiar after a while.
The achievements in this game are quite easy. A lot are for just playing through the game and a bunch of others are easter eggs. None of them is missable and you can go back to earlier completed levels to get the ones you missed. I would highly suggest first playing through the game without a guide. As a tip to make it a bit easier for yourself, I would suggest flushing every toilet you see, so you don’t have to go back to find out which one you missed.
