I watched NAC Games play the demo of WYRMHALL: Brush and Banter and enjoyed it so much. I find it so clever how the developers used the theme of the game and the magic world in which this all takes place to show little parts of the story while still staying within the theme. The demo promised a great storytelling game with unique characters and a lot of humor.
And here it is—the full game! And it didn’t disappoint at all. It is awesome! It has such wonderful characters and so much humor, and it also feels fulfilling cleaning all those bizarre and weird items. I’m also impressed by the effects of some of those items. They are not static objectives—some are, but a lot have crazy effects if you play around with them.
The world of Wyrmhall isn’t one I want to live in, but oh boy, I wouldn’t have wanted to miss this unique story. During the game, you have to make multiple choices to determine the outcome later on, as well as make choices if you want to clean the item the customer gave you and if you do, how well will you clean it? That also has an impact on the story. Most of the time, I went to fully clean an item as I loved the shiny effect you get when doing so.
The only thing I would love to see is button prompts for switching between the different tools. This can be 1,2, 3, etc but also q,w,e, etc. However, I can see how one certain character on day 7 would not make this work. (I’ll not go into details because that would spoil certain things).
For all the achievements, you have to play multiple times through the game, and some are missable because you need to do a specific thing in the story or the opposite and avoid a certain event. However, the game is short, and future playthroughs go quicker as you know the mechanics and maybe even decide not to clean items that well, if at all. Unlocking all the achievements in WYRMHALL: Brush and Banter takes around 5 hours.
I give WYRMHALL: Brush and Banter 4.5 out of 5 stars. I would like to end my review with a quote from one of the characters at the start of the game: Don’t let “perfect” be the enemy of “great.”
